The resilient Elephant & Castle shopping centre has a range of shops and a market outside. Its not been given the chance to show its full potential. It is long overdue a makeover, especially now that all the surrounding building work has commenced. There were plans to turn it into a university! Where will the new and increasing residents shop? The locals deserve a shopping centre that has a wide range of affordable shops and entertainment. Hopefully, the final plan will be more imaginative than what is currently proposed.

You know they said this place would be rubble come 2018. Well its still here, at least for the time being and, to be honest, I'm glad. If a private developer had built the thing and then thought it wise to tear it down, then I would fret, its the fact that the Council want it gone that irks me. So this place was built in the 1960's and, like the idiots they were, they thought that flimsy plastic building materials would last over the years so ,despite the very nice design and its amazing rail connections, it began to wear down. Now when something begins to 'wear down' we British, always looking to save pennies, consider two things before knocking it down. 1. Does it look nice? 2. Could it look nice? Its a pretty easy test to pass. I mean if you could make a turd look nice then in our eyes it has reason to exist. That's why Hays Galleria and most of the docklands still exist-they could look beautiful. And so they did. It didn't take much effort, just a couple of million from a German Banker and we managed to turn places like Hays Wharf into Hays Galleria and the docks of Wapping into such beautiful offices. Now after Labour outlawed logic in the late 1990's, we've gone about ruining as much as possible. Beyond the closure of community centres and Libraries, roads have earned the scorn of the Council. After simple yet effective roundabout in Elephant and Castle was removed because they couldn't be bothered to clean the underpasses, it was only a matter of time before they came for the shopping centre. Now if we put on our logic goggles for a sec we see that the amount of effort required to demolish the shopping centre and build a new one is a lot more than just refurbishing it. It would take about a day and cost no more than a grand, but since the Labour council is so dedicated to the Logic Act of 1999, we can do nothing but watch the demolition of a great community staple, an act that will no doubt clog the already congested Elephant and Castle. I have no doubt they'll find a way to make it last as long as possible So for that reason, I'm giving it a five star. Yeah this place is a bit dingy but that's apart of its character. If you want a genuine five star experience, hop on a bus and find one, this isn't it. This is a simple unique place, made more beautiful by what it stands against than what it is.
